Ending the year with a bang!

Considered as one of the most important and largest exhibitions due to its reach, scope, regulations and competitions, the Omani Society of Photography (OSP) launched on Tuesday its 23rd Annual Photography Exhibition under the patronage of Sheikh Khaled al Mawali, the Chairman of Majlis A’Shura, held at OSP’s headquarters in Al Hail North.


As has been established, the exhibition is characterised by amazing art works — 117 photos taken by creative youth that showed the essence of beauty available all around us.


Seventy-six photographers were chosen to take part in the exhibition with 82 photos selected for the open category and 35 photos qualifying for the creative category.


Photos were submitted by Omani and non-Omani photographers alike.


On the sidelines of the launching, the winners of this exhibition and the winners of the World Cups at FIAP Youth Biennale for the categories under 16 and under 21 years were announced.


The winners in the open category, respectively are: Abdulmalik al Maimani, Hind al Hajria, Nadia al Amria, al Munthir al Siyabi and Ali al Ghafri.


The winners in the creative category respectively are: Abdullah al Hashmi, Tasneem al Jahwaria, Shiakha al Saltia, Zakaria al Dhuhli, and Ohood al Rahbia.


In the international field, the Sultanate represented by OSP acquired six international prizes this year.


A golden prize was rewarded to Walaa al Hethailia, while Ahmed al Hadhrami got an honourable prize in the category of u’Uder 16’ for the youth biennale.


The other four prizes were rewarded to photographers in the category of under 21 years. Loai al Jabri won the Golden prize, Shatha al Ghamaria acquired the silver, Abdullah al Ruzaiqi won bronze and the honourable prize went to Reem al Wahshia.


The 23rd Annual Photography Exhibition is the concluding event for all the activities of OSP for 2016. The agenda has been full of personal and collective exhibitions, workshops and courses. The exhibition continues till December 25, 2016.


The event also saw OSP rewarding the winners of the short films production that was organised by the Sultan Qaboos Centre for Science and Culture and was launched last June.


This film contest aimed at producing short Omani films with innovative ideas on topics of interest to the society and humans. It also aimed to reinforce the authentic values and customs of the Omani community, and to address some of the phenomena and behaviours in a cultural and artistic fields.


The short film competition is the first of its kind carried out by the center. The number of works submitted for the competition totaled twenty-four short films.


A committee was formed to evaluate the works and the panel included a number of specialists from the General Authority for Radio and Television who paid special attention to the technical and criticism criteria.


The committee also put into consideration the clarity of the idea, technical processing, the containment of the film on the basic elements for the production of short films, scenario, directing, editing, and creativity.
