Electricity production rises by 2.2pc in September

MUSCAT: The Sultanate’s total electricity production until the end of September 2018 rose by 2.2 per cent to reach 29,169.1 GW per hour compared to the end of the same month in 2017, which saw a total production of 28,554.3 GW per hour, according to statistics released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).


The total electricity production in the governorates of North and South Al Batinah and Al Dhahirah reached 15,183 GW per hour, recording an average increase of 2.6 per cent over the same period in 2017, when the production was 14,805.2 GW per hour.


The governorates of the North and South Al Sharqiyah posted a 1.2 per cent rise in total electricity production to reach 6,617.3 GW per hour compared to an output of 6,540.9 GW last year. The total electricity production in the Governorate of Muscat rose by 4.5 per cent during the nine-month period this year to reach 3,082.1 GW per hour compared to 2,949.3 GW during the same period in 2017.


In Dhofar, the total electricity production fell by 5.8 per cent until the end of September 2018 to reach 2,642.3 GW per hour compared to the end of September 2017, when it was 2,805.1 GW per hour.


The total electricity production in the Governorate of Al Dakhiliyah was recorded at 943.5 GW per hour, which is an increase of 7.1 per cent compared to 880.8 GW at the end of September 2017.


In the Governorate of Al Wusta, the total electricity production increased by 32.4 per cent during the nine-month period this year, reaching 354.2 GW per hour against 267.6 GW per hour in 2017, the data revealed.


Total electricity production in the Governorate of Musandam also increased by 13.5 per cent till the end of September 2018, reaching 346.7 GW per hour compared to last year, when it amounted to 305.5 GW per hour.


The net figures are inclusive of purchases by Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) and the Rural Areas Electricity Company (RAEC) from local power generating entities, as well as output from auto-generators and diesel rental units.


The Sultanate’s net electricity production during the first nine months of 2018 witnessed a rise of 2.9 per cent to touch 29,064.2 GW per hour compared to 28,233.8 GW per hour achieved during the prior year period.


As per the NCSI data, the governorates of North and South Al Batinah and Al Dhahirah topped the list of governorates with the highest net electricity production, reaching 15,102.7 GW per hour from 14,678.2 GW per hour in 2017.


The governorates of North and South Al Sharqiyah ranked second, recording a rise by 1.3 per cent to reach 6,613 GW per hour by end of September 2018 compared to 6,529.1 GW in 2017.


The net electricity production in Muscat was at 3,087.2 GW per hour, an increase of 8.1 per cent compared to last year, which saw the net production at 2,855.4 GW per hour.


Dhofar recorded a net electricity production of 2,522. GW per hour in the first nine months of 2018, down 6 per cent compared to the same period in 2017, when it was 2,683 GW per hour, whereas Al Dakhiliyah net electricity production rose by 7.1 per cent to 937.4 GW against 874.9 GW per hour in 2017. The net electricity production in Al Wusta rose by 45.2 per cent to reach 464.6 GW per hour compared to 320 GW per hour in 2017. An increase in net electricity production by 14.9 per cent was recorded in Musandam to reach 336.8 GW per hour against 293.2 GW recorded in 2017. — ONA
