Efforts showing results, but speed still a concern: ROP

Muscat: Royal Oman Police (ROP) has raised concerns that speed violations continue to hamper its effects to regulate traffic violations and reduce the number of casualties from accidents in the country.


In a report released recently, it said that nearly 70 per cent of all road accidents are due to speeding though there has been a decline in accidents and deaths for nearly fifth year in a row.


The ROP report, however, added that the use of detection devices has contributed to the reduction in the number of violations and accidents caused by speeding to 53 per cent.


Brigadier General Mohammed bin Awad al Rawas, Director General of Traffic, said statistics for the fifth consecutive year saw a decrease in traffic accidents and human deaths (52 per cent), injuries (33 per cent) and accidents (67 per cent) compared to the end of 2012.


He added that efforts are continuing to make roads safer for the users. “It is important to cut the number of accidents because of the fact that drivers staying busy at the wheels, especially using mobile phones.”


He clarified that the reduction of traffic accidents is based on several factors - improvement in the road conditions, awareness campaigns, development of laws and effective supervision to ensure compliance with these laws and regulations.


“The traffic law and its executive regulations are developed as a result of a study in which everyone participated, making it suitable and appropriate to ensure the smooth flow of traffic,” the report said.


The report added, “ROP has achieved good results in the Global Competitiveness Report released by the World Economic Forum, which measures the factors that contribute to the prosperity of the people in 140 countries around the world, where the Sultanate was ranked first in the Arab world.


The report also indicated that the Sultanate was ranked first in the world in terms of the incidence of terrorism and its absence from terrorist attacks due to the political and security stability enjoyed by the Sultanate, which in turn reflected in the cost of crime index to businesses.”


ROP has achieved a 94 per cent satisfaction rate for e-services according to the survey conducted by the Information Technology Authority in the Digitalisation of its activities.


It may be noted that the number accidents declined in November 2018 by 48.3 per cent compared to a year ago for the same period. The number of deaths from accident also dropped by 39.3 per cent during this period. A total of 640 deaths were reported from 3,845 accidents in 2017.
