Education Ministry panel approves new programmes

MUSCAT: The Licensing Institutions and Programmes Committee at the Ministry of Higher Education issued a number of resolutions during a meeting under the chairmanship of Dr Abdullah bin Mohammed al Sarmi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education.


The committee discussed a number of topics of interest to the private higher education sector, in addition to a number of applications for licenses for academic programmes in private higher education institutions.


The committee licensed the Master of Social Work programme in Dhofar University, Master of Science in Computer Science programme at the German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech).


Six academic programmes obtained the conditional approval until the institutions complete all the required procedures.


These programmes included Bachelor of Education (Islamic education and Arabic Language Teacher), Bachelor of Education (Science and math Teacher) at Al Sharqiyah University, the Master of Science in Supply Chain Management Programme and International Operations Programme at Caledonian College of Engineering, in addition to the granting of conditional approval to three programmes at the Gulf College, a diploma and a bachelor’s degree (Hons) in Computing, Diploma and BA (Hons) in Information Systems, as well as a diploma and a BA (Hons) in Mobile Computing Science.


The committee also issued a decision approving the admission of graduates of the general diploma (from non-scientific tracks) in the engineering disciplines provided that the educational institutions that provide engineering and scientific programs to prepare an intensive program for students for an academic year, to teach programme-related science courses. The Committee also approved the request of the German University of Technology in Oman to establish the Centre for the History of Islamic Sciences.  — ONA
