Muscat, March 12 -

The Sultanate will mark the Earth Hour on March 24, the Environment Society of Oman (ESO) announced on Monday.

At a press conference, the ESO has invited everyone in the country to observe the Earth Hour on the day.

Earth Hour is an event held every year, encouraging individuals, communities and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights for one hour, from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm on a specific day.

This year’s global theme for the day is ‘Connect2Earth’, which focuses on raising awareness on global biodiversity and its importance to ecosystems.

This year’s event will focus on Arabian Sea Humpback Whales.

Through a collaboration with Xcape Muscat, it will also hold a ‘scavenger hunt’ at the

Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher.

The hunt will challenge participants to solve riddles using clues and information about Humpback Whales and find hidden treasure.

The other forms of entertainment include live music performances, colouring activities for children, food stalls and the screening of a documentary on environment when the lights are out.

“In the last seven years, we have noticed Earth Hour gaining traction in Oman with more energy being saved each year as more people show their commitment to our planet,” said Suad al Harthi, Programmes Director, ESO.

ESO’s last year’s event attracted more than 400 people.

“The success of Earth Hour 2017 inspired us to continue our efforts to raise awareness through exciting interactive programmes that engage with the community and promote a culture of conservation.”

Xcape Muscat Chairman Abdullah al Fahdi said, “We are honoured to be part of this important global event that addresses pressing environmental challenges endangering our planet and the future generations. We are delighted to join forces with ESO to help make Earth Hour 2018 even more impactful.”

Special Technical Services LLC (STS) and Al Zawawi Group are sponsors of this year’s Earth Hour.
