Boskalis Westminster Oman Ltd, the contractor undertaking the construction of the Bulk Liquid Berth in the Port of Duqm, yesterday marked the successful completion of a key phase in the execution of the marine engineering phase of the RO 200 million project.

The milestone was marked in the presence of officials representing the Special Economic Zone Authority of Duqm (SEZAD), Duqm Development Company, Duqm Refinery, Port of Duqm, and the consultants and contractors handling the project. The basin area surrounding the pier was flooded for the first time since the completion of the berth, which will facilitate the export of petroleum products when it is fully operational.

The Bulk Liquid Berth, which extends one kilometre into the sea, features two jetties that can berth large product tankers. Dredging is still ongoing to achieve a depth of –18 metres, while part of the dredged material will be used for land reclamation. Land reclamation for half of the roughly 4.6 km secondary wave breakwater has been completed as well.

After completion of the project, oil tanks and warehouses for bulk materials and facilities will be built by Duqm Refinery on the reclaimed land area to export refined products from Duqm Refinery and Petrochemical Industries. Refined products to be handled at the berth will be naphtha, jet fuel, diesel, high sulphur fuel oil, liquefied petroleum gas, coke and sulphur.
