MUSCAT, Jan 22 - Muscat Municipality has warned of hefty penalties for reckless behaviour in public, which includes dumping of waste in public or spitting in the open. According to signages kept at beaches and other prominent places by the municipality, dumping of garbage in unspecified areas or in the open — causing an eyesore to fellow residents — will attract a fine of RO 100.

“These actions have been initiated as part of our drive to keep the city clean and maintain
hygiene and cleanliness at public places,” said a source at the municipality.
The authorities had earlier announced stricter punishments for those dumping trash in wadis which restricts free flow of rainwater. Those found violating the rule will be fined RO 400. Repeat offences will attract a fine of RO 500.
Additionally, those found littering open areas, touristic places or wadis will be asked to clean up the area as well as fined.
Throwing rubbish from moving vehicles will be treated as an offence.
Those found throwing waste from vehicles will be jailed for ten days and fined RO 300.
