MUSCAT, Feb 5 - As the world is catching up with the evolution of future cities, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) play a crucial role in making them smarter. Drones, as the UAVs are called, will reshape and determine the future of the cities with a host of applications and solutions.

These views were shared with the Observer by Hadj Bourdoucen, Chairman of the committee for ‘UVS-Oman 2019’. “Future cities are smart. They need efficiency and speed. Often they cannot be done by humans. Drones can do a job that cannot be accomplished by human beings,” said Hadj, also the Dean of College of Engineering, Sultan Qaboos University, on the sidelines of the event.

Smart cities will be the most vibrant and progressive places for technological development

in the future, he said.

A drone, in a technological context, is an unmanned aircraft. It is a flying robot. It can fly in the space, go under water or go to a place where humans cannot enter, he added.

The workshops, being held as part of ‘UVS-Oman 2019’, are intended to help students get insights into the widening use of unmanned aerial vehicles in future technology, he said.

“The outcome of the workshops will be shared with the authorities concerned, businesses and their competitors for the economic feasibility of student innovations and inventions,” he said.

The range of targeted topics is very broad, but priority is given to subjects on real-world applications, including research, industry, business and education.
