BERLIN: Borussia Dortmund slipped to a 2-1 defeat at bottom side Darmstadt while RB Leipzig crashed 3-0 at home to SV Hamburg for a first home defeat of the season in a day of upsets in the German football Bundesliga on Saturday.

Champions Bayern Munich took full advantage but left it to the last in a 2-0 win at relegation-threatened Ingolstadt, Artura Vidal scoring in the final minute before Arjen Robben made it two for Carlo Ancelotti it’s side in stoppage time. “It was an important victory for us. We had to work very hard for it,” Ancelotti said.

“We had to really step up our game in the second half and in the end we were rewarded. Ingolstadt were defensively good but we were still able to win. We showed great character.”

The results leave Bayern with a seven-point lead at the top over Leipzig. Third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt stay a further seven points behind after succumbing to a 3-0 defeat at Bayer Leverkusen, with Javier Hernandez bagging a brace and Kevin Volland also on target.

Borussia Moenchengladbach meanwhile made it three wins out of three under new coach Dieter Hecking thanks to a first-half goal by Thorgan Hazard in a 1-0 win at Werder Bremen.

Hertha Berlin stay sixth after going down 2-0 at Schalke. Guido Burgstaller and Leon Goretzka scoring in each half.

Darmstadt picked up only their third win of the season and a first for new coach Torsten Frings, with Terrence Boyd and Antonio Mirko-Colak scoring in each half, either side of a Raphael Guerreiro goal for Dortmund just before half-time.

“It was an outstanding performance by us and we did everything we set out to achieve,” Frings said.

“We didn’t want to let Dortmund get into the game. More importantly we played with a lot of confidence.”

Leipzig’s unbeaten home record ended against a Hamburg side who picked up just a second win on the road this season, with new signings Kyriakos Papadopoulos and Walace putting the northern Germans on the front foot.

Papadopoulos headed home from a corner in the 18th minute and Brazilian defender Walace then get his head to the ball from another corner six minutes later. Aaron Hunt wrapped it up in stoppage time for a second straight defeat for Leipzig.

Hamburg coach Markus Gisdol said the win capped a perfect week, with a victory last weekend over Leverkusen and a midweek cup win over Cologne.

“We didn’t want to fall into the opponent’s pressing trap and we managed that,” he said. — DPA
