By Kaushalendra Singh — SALALAH: May 29 - Doctors advise people to take special care to avoid any health hazard while fasting during Ramadan. They are asking for extra precaution as the temperature is very high and many people who are on medication intend to do fasting.

Dr Sanjay Gupta, Senior Consultant Nephrology and Head Unit Sultan Qaboos Hospital Salalah (SQH), advised people suffering from kidney diseases to avoid fasting as remaining without water for a long duration is not good for them.

“Remaining without water for a long time causes dehydration even for a common man. The situation complicates with the kidney patients. I strongly recommend them to stick to dietary advice and do not miss medicine.” He said.

Dr Yousuf E Youstous, Urology and Infertility Expert at Al Hakeem Medical Center, also cautioned those who are fasting and asked them to remain hydrate. “Fasting period is nearly 14 hours. Everyday water requirement for a healthy man is 2-3 litres. I suggest people to compensate that requirement during non-fasting time between evening and morning.”

“Ideally they should drink half a litre water when they break fast and split rest of the requirement in small doses. They should ensure that they are having normal intake every day. It is advisable to have some water every two hours during non-fasting hours,” he said.

Dr Wael Maarouf, Specialist Surgeon at Al Hakeem, advised the diabetes patients not to do fasting and others should take lots of water. “Patients who become lenient on sugar during fasting are prone to hypoglycaemia than hyperglycaemia. Sugar patients should avoid strenuous activities and drink more water than juices etc.”

Dr Pankaj Jain, Internist at Badr al Saama Hospital, advised not to have heavy food soon after fasting. He also advised not to have oily and fried stuff during Iftar. “They should start with fruits along with water. After that they should have frequent meals in small quantity consisting of adequate fiber. The diet should be balanced.”

Dr Pankaj admitted to have many people coming to hospital with complains of pain in abdomen, nausea and vomiting. These cases are more during Ramadan due to imbalanced content of food, hygiene and not having adequate water post fasting.

He also advised the sugar patients to visit a doctor to adjust medicine and do not become their own doctors.

“Many people think that diabetes is related to food and there is no need to take medicines if they are not having food. Fast cannot cure diabetes and in case of any discomfort, sweating or any other abnormal symptom, they should immediately consult a doctor.”
