Los Angeles: German carmaker Diamler has announced plans to invest 1 billion dollars in an existing manufacturing plant in Alabama, where the assembly of electric sport utility vehicles is planned to begin after 2020.

The luxury carmaker also said it plans to build a new battery plant near the existing Tuscaloosa factory, which opened 20 years ago in the southern US state. Construction work on the new facility is expected to begin in 2018, with operations to start at the beginning of the next decade.

The company also said it plans to offer customers at least one electrified alternative across its entire portfolio of SUVs by 2022.

“With this 1 billion dollar investment, we are significantly growing our manufacturing footprint here in Alabama, while sending a clear message to our customers across the US and around the world: Mercedes-Benz will continue to be on the cutting-edge of electric vehicle development and production,” Markus Schaefer, a company board member, said in a statement. — dpa
