Muscat: The cyclone Kyarr, which has been downgraded to category 1, is 440 km away from the nearest Oman coast of Ras Madrakah and is moving in the westward/southwesterly direction, parallel to the governorates of South Sharkiyah and Al Wusta, said the latest report from Oman Meteorology.

According to the latest weather analysis, there is no probability of the cyclone crossing the Oman coasts.

But the sea conditions will continue to be rough along the coast of Al Wusta, Dhofar and South Sharqiyah with the maximum weave height of  6 to 8 meters, and moderate to rough over rest of the Oman coasts with a maximum wave height of 3 meters.

The estimated surface wind speed around the center is between 64 and 82 knots and there are chances of seawater inundation over low-level coastal areas coinciding with the timing of high sea tides.

Oman Meteorology continues to monitor the new tropical system observed in the southeast Arabian Sea, which will be updated in the latest weather alerts.

It had earlier predicted that the governorates of North Sharqiyah, Muscat and Al Dakhiliya expected to receive varying levels of rainfall in the coming hours.

Meanwhile, High tidal waves hit the coastal areas of Oman from Suhar to Dhofar as a result of the indirect impact from Cyclone Kyarr, forcing the Royal Oman Police (ROP) to close the Muttrah seaside road for traffic on Wednesday.

As a precautionary measure, electricity has been disconnected from parts of the Sawadi area in Barka as a result of the rising seawater levels.

The National Committee for Civil Defence (NCCD) has issued a high tide alert for the sultanate coastal areas, starting from 9 am.

With the coasts of north Oman likely to be hit, Suhar Municipality announced the temporary closure of the coastal road between Al Shizaw and Khor al Siyabi due to damage caused by tidal waves. The stretch was closed in coordination with the Royal Oman Police (ROP).

The electricity supply to Jubilee Park in Suhar was suspended as a precautionary measure with reports of high waves making the seawater to enter inland. According to an official at Oman Meteorology, “Effects of Kyarr started on Monday and will continue for several days. Most of the effects will be indirect, which will lead to sporadic rainfall in many places, including Dhofar.”
