April 24 - The Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRA) has launched national awareness campaign to help guide and monitor the use of Internet by children.

As per various studies, children are often vulnerable to online extortion and abuses of various kinds.

Muna Mohammed Ali al Balushi, senior specialist, International Relations, TRA, said, “Before purchasing mobile phones for children, parents must know the amount of risk that a child may have when entering this vast and unknown space. Parents must know the child's physical, psychological, and emotional ability to deal with a smartphone. They should to specify the times when the devices are to be used and also explain other rules with regards to the use of the communications equipment.”

Muna, who is part of the national awareness campaign for children with regards to the use of communications services, Khalk Aref, at the TRA pavilion at COMEX 2018, said, “There are rules parents should be following up with children while using communication devices. Parents must supervise the use of communication devices by children and allow them freedom as per their age”:

Downloading of materials from the Internet and the process of developing social relations should be only under the supervision of parents.

TRA pointed out that many cyber crimes take place as children use Internet without awareness or guidance. As per the studies, children who go into the Internet without awareness or guidance are more vulnerable to extortion and cyber piracy, and are more likely to suffer from psychological problems and behavioral disorders.
