Cultural Gems of Arabia and India, an exciting new exhibition by Dutch artist Tonny Holsbergen, presented works from recent travels in Oman and Rajasthan at the Bait Muscat Hills Clubhouse terrace last week.

Held in honour of Oman’s 46th National Day, the exhibition was the latest in a series by Tonny over the past decade-and-a-half that celebrated the traditional heritage and culture of Oman and express the artist’s admiration of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos.

A new dimension was added with inspiration from the traditional culture of Rajasthan featuring the desert landscape and the time-honoured nomadic way of life.

Tonny’s work is characterised by penetrating character studies in dynamic contexts. She captures fleeting moments with impressionistic drawing and brushwork, preserving cultural history with evocative perspectives.

Her research includes careful study of cultural settings and genuine engagement with people, especially with the Bedouins of Oman. Those who are familiar with Tonny’s creativity will find paintings and pastels that seem like wonderful old friends as well as works that reveal new aspects of her engaging artistry.

Bait Muzna believes that different arts can compliment one another and in that respect Bait Muzna Gallery sponsored world music band from South Africa, Desert Rose, to come especially for this exhibition. Peaceful and mindful sounds of Desert Rose inspired by sacred music themes contributed greatly to the unique experience under the stars.

It is the supreme decision-making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, opened for signature in 1992 during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro and later entered into force in 1995.

Desert Rose (Lynne and Yusuf) was founded in 1999 by world music composer, based in Cape Town they are regarded as leading composers, producers and performers of Universal World Music.
