MUSCAT: The two-day scientific international conference on archives and documents, ‘The archives as pillar of national memory’, organised by the National Records and Archives Authority (NRAA) and Middle East College, concluded on Thursday under the auspices of Dr Hamad bin Mohammed al Dhoyani, Chairman of NRAA in the presence of a number of dignitaries, researchers, intellectuals and professionals from the Sultanate and abroad.

The conference was organised to highlight the cultural and historic role of Oman, Arab and international archive throughout history. It builds on the achievements made in similar conferences organised by NRAA in Turkey, Zanzibar, Burundi, France, the Comoros, Kuwait and Muscat.

The conference came out with a number of recommendations, which included the importance of supporting Palestine in protecting its documents and archives against Israeli aggression and organising the ‘Archives as pillar of national memory’ conference annually.

The conference recommended supporting legislation that can help archives play a key role in scientific research and sustainable development.
