MUSCAT: Crime rate in the Sultanate fell 17 per cent in 2015 as against the previous year, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI). 2015 saw the least number of crimes since 2013. Statistics reveal 52 per cent of offenders were non-Omanis. Two-thirds of the crimes took place in governorates of Muscat, North Al Batinah and Dhofar, while governorates of Musandam and Al Wusta recorded the lowest crime rate of one per cent each. Musandam and Al Wusta registered the lowest offender rate of two per cent and one per cent, respectively. NCSI’s 2015 statistics on crimes and offenders reveal four crimes occurred per 1,000 population.

Crime index in Al Buraimi Governorate was 30 per 1,000 of the population, mainly due to a jump in violations of labour law and Foreigners Residence Law, and entering the country illegally. There were six offenders per 1,000 population. Among system violation crimes, those entering the country illegally accounted for 74.9 per cent, violation of Foreigners Residence Law 16.5 per cent and labour law offences 7.9 per cent. The rate of offenders involved in theft and attempted thefts was 64.4 per cent, financial crimes 20.7 per cent, dishonesty 13,6 per cent and fraud 15,9 per cent.
