Motorists in Oman have only a couple of days left before the new black points system for traffic violations comes into effect.

From March 1, motorists getting more than 12 black points in a year will have their driving licences suspended for six months. If the motorist gets more than 12 points again the following year, the licence will be seized for a year. If the black points exceed more than 12 for a third consecutive year, the licence will be cancelled. The driver will have to take the driving test afresh after paying RO100 for a new licence.

ROP has conducting intensive awareness campaigns to brief the drivers on the new penalties for traffic violations that include:

Parking a vehicle at the slot meant for ambulances will cost one black point and a fine of RO35.

Overtaking from the shoulder of a road will cost two black points and a fine of RO50.

Driving slow below the prescribed limit will cost one black point and a fine of RO35.

Parking a vehicle at the slot meant for the disabled will cost two black points and a fine of RO50.

Covering the face that makes identifying the driver difficult will cost three black points and RO50.

Installation of additional devices and equipment in a vehicle to increase the torque will cost three black points and RO50.

Driving vehicles in other than the classes specified in the license will cost three black points and RO50.

Vehicles with ‘Export’ number plate should be registered within seven days or else will cost RO1 and RO35.

Placing the number plate in an undesignated location will be also seen as a violation that will cost one black point and RO35.
