MUSCAT: State Council Vice-Chairman, Dr Shaikh Al Khattab bin Ghalib al Hinai on Sunday received Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League. Dr Al Khattab stressed that the Sultanate under the wise leadership of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, is always keen to support joint Arab action, and is working to support initiatives that carry out the plans and programmes aimed at strengthening the unity of Arab nations, at the forefront of which stands the Arab League.

He stated that the Arab League plays an important role in addressing the issues of the nations, and appreciated the efforts made to facilitate ongoing coordination between member states. This has led to the deepening of cooperation in the economic, political, social, scientific and cultural fields, and through its specialised agencies in pursuit of the development of Arab interests. Dr Al Khattab said that the next stage requires more effort to face the challenges, especially the economic difficulties, through activating joint economic action programmes.

The vice-chairman said that the State Council, which is represented by the Council of Oman, is keen to participate actively in the work of the Arab Parliament, as it recognises it to be one of the pillars of joint work. The election of the vice-president of the Arab Parliament from the Sultanate for the current session validates this. The talks focused on the strengthening of cooperation between the Council and the League of Arab States, particularly in the parliamentary field. The meeting was held in the presence of Musallam bin Ali al Ma’ashani and Khamis bin Said al Sulaimi, members of the State Council. — ONA
