IIC Technologies, a leading Indian provider of geospatial solutions and services, has announced that it has secured a contract to support the implementation of a Unified Addressing System across the Sultanate.

The Unified Addressing System is one several initiatives outlined by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NSCI) to help support the transformation of Oman into a ‘GeoSmart’ nation. All of these initiatives are rooted in the development of the Oman National Spatial Data Infrastructure (ONSDI), which is key to facilitating the sharing and utilisation of geospatial information across all government entities in the Sultanate.

Notable among the NSCI’s many objectives is the introduction of a Unified Addressing System designed to provide a locational tag to every building, office or home in the Sultanate. Modelled on the lines of universally popular addressing systems, the Oman project will be based on uniform addressing standards and specifications.

IIC Technologies said it received the contract against the backdrop of the Geospatial World Forum 2018, that concluded in the Indian city of Hyderabad recently.

Explaining the significance of the project, IIC Technologies said: “This addressing information plays a vital role in most transactions, provided by thousands of different organizations, include an address — from registering to vote, collection of waste, delivery of social care, connection of utility services, quotation for insurance, delivery of packages, allocation of school places and most crucially responding to emergency situations where time really can be a matter of life or death.

A geographical overview of addresses is required for a large area, such as land administration and utility planning and maintenance.”

Addresses generated for each every home, office, commercial organization or institution will include a building number, street name, city name, wilayat and governorate, thereby creating unique locational attributes for every residential, corporate, business, organisational or institutional entity in the Sultanate. Additionally, the new system will help authorities conduct a ‘Smart Census’ in 2020. Leveraging its presence in major markets around the world, IIC Technologies provides end-to-end geospatial solutions to the aeronautics, defence, government, infrastructure, marine, Oil & Gas, transportation and utility sectors.
