Consumer protection law violators penalised

By Staff Reporter — MUSCAT: April 4 - Several judgments have been passed against a number of business houses for violating the provisions of Consumer Protection Law, which included conviction, imprisonment and fines worth RO 4,000. In the first case, the law enforcement officers during routine inspections found that a shop was selling expired goods and accordingly necessary action was taken against the company. The case was referred to the competent court, which ordered an imprisonment for a period of six months, suspension of the business and a fine worth RO 3,000. The expired goods were confiscated and destroyed.


In the second case, the inspectors found that a department store was offering promotions on goods and services without obtaining approvals from the concerned authorities. The court ordered a fine of RO 500. In the third case, PACP received a complaint from a consumer against a workshop to which he had brought the engine of his boat after it malfunctioned. The workshop repaired the engine and returned it to the consumer, who said the product broke down twice again in the five days.


The owner asked the consumer to perform a service in a Dubai, but the defect appeared again, and the consumer approached PACP. The case file was referred for a legal action and workshop was convicted of violations of the Consumer Protection Law. He was sentenced and fined RO 300. In another case, a consumer lodged a complaint that the type of rice that he bought one of the stores when cooked gave a bad smell. Following the complaint, officers visited the shop and collected the rice samples. It was confirmed that the rice variety did not conform to the specified standards. He was ordered imprisonment of six months and a fine of RO 1,000. The shop was closed for two weeks.
