Construction sector sees 7.7% dip in expatriates

The construction sector in Oman has seen a 7.7 per cent (589,089) decline in the number of expatriates at the end of July 2018 compared with the same period a year ago, the National Centre of Statistics and Information (NCSI) has said.


The number of expatriates in the construction sector was 619,744 at the end of December 2017.


There has also been a fall in the number of expatriates employed in the private sector.


The number of expatriates in clerical jobs dropped 11.2 per cent at the end of July 2018 compared with the same period in 2017.


There has been a marginal decline of 0.7 per cent in the number of expatriates (36,800) holding positions of directors, managers and administration roles at the end of July 2018 compared with the same period a year ago.


There were 37,076 expatriates in these positions at the end of December 2017.


The number of Omanis holding positions of directors, managers and administration roles increased from 25,020 at the end of December 2017 to 26,228 at the end of June 2018.


The total number of Omanis in the private sector increased by 4.4 per cent to 246,855 at the June 2018 compared with the same period a year ago.


The total number of expatriates in the private sector dropped by 2.9 per cent to 1,754,466 at the end of July 2018. The Ministry of Manpower, as part of its efforts to regulate the job market, has extended by another six months the ban on hiring expatriates for a large number of professions in the private sector.
