Abu Dhabi: Two-goal hero Wu Lei has revealed that confidence played a major role in China’s 3-0 win over the Philippines on Friday, a result which saw the East Asians qualify for the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 Round of 16.

The victory, China’s second successive three-point haul, helped Marcello Lippi’s charges maintain their position at the top of Group C ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Korea Republic which will determine who finishes top of the standings.

Wu excelled throughout the game, with the Shanghai SIPG striker notching an impressive brace ahead of Yu Dabao’s later effort which added a distinct gloss to the scoreline.

“To be honest, everyone knew that we would advance to the next stage of the competition with a win against the Philippines,” explained the 27-year-old.

“As a result, all of the team was in a confident mood both before and during the match.”

“We absolutely believed that we could win the match, so we made sure that we played as well as we could in order to get the three points [and progress],” he added.
