MUSCAT: The international symposium on environmental measures and their role in coastal protection kicked off on Monday under the auspices of Mohammed bin Salim al Toobi, Minister of Environment and Climate Affairs.

The three-day symposium aims at exchanging experiences among participants in the field of environmental measures and coastal protection, and presenting experiences from ISESCO member states on how to preserve beaches in the light of urban expansion of coastal cities and the accompanying tourism and industrial investments.

The symposium also aims to build partnerships between the participants and institutions related to environmental protection and support their capacities in this field, and environmental awareness about the importance of coastal conservation and coastal environment.

The patron of the event sponsored the launch of the film Marine Environment in the Sultanate of Oman produced by the National Field Research Centre in the field of conservation of environment at the Diwan of Royal Court. The film is the result of the field research studies of the centre in the field of environment.

The first day of the symposium included two working sessions focusing on the characteristics and areas of the marine environment. The second session dealt with the governance of sustainable coastal measures.

The symposium will continue on Tuesday. — ONA
