Muscat: Immediately after heavy rains that lashed the capital city, Muscat Municipality launched cleaning operations in the affected areas. At the site of the Muscat Festival, which is cancelled for a day on Monday, cleaning and restoration efforts are progressing to resume the event. According to the organising committee of Muscat Festival, the decision to shut the annual cultural and entertainment event for a day “was taken to ensure the safety of the visitors”."The General Directorate of the Municipality has reinforced additional workforce to deal with rainwater catchments, and the removal of slush and clay from the roads and streets", the civic body said in an online tweet. With scattered rains expected to continue for one more day as a result of the existing low pressure, the municipality said that all precautionary measures are in place to deal with any untoward incidents. People have been asked not to risk their lives and also those who accompany them by venturing into wadis and other flooded areas.

“The situation is under close watch of the municipality and working in association with other authorities concerned to do the follow up actions following the adverse weather conditions”, the municipality said. Waterlogging was reported from the downtown areas in the city including Muttrah, Hamriya and Ruwi. Roads were filled with mud and slush. According to a resident in Hamriya, people living in villas struggled while those living in apartments were not affected much.“We are now busy cleaning up our home and putting back things in order," he said.
