Children to walk for a cause today

MUSCAT: Hundreds of children from various schools of Oman will gather at the Qurum Natural Park at 3.30 pm on Monday for a noble cause. They will walk to bring world’s attention to help save children’s lives, fight for their rights and shine spotlight on the most pressing challenges faced by them, thanks to the efforts of UNICEF.

This will mark the Sultanate’s participation in the global event for the first time with a number of ‘takeover’ activities on the anniversary of adoption of the Convention on Rights of the Child and mobilisation of the first World Children’s Day (WCD), UNICEF said in a statement.

‘World Children’s Day’ is a fun day with a serious message. Children around the world are coming together to raise attention to their rights and save their lives,” said Lana al Wreikat, UNICEF Representative.

The thought of takeover activities stems from the fact that children will be taking over key roles today, in media, politics, business, sport and entertainment to voice their support for millions of their peers who are unschooled, unprotected and uprooted globally.

A series of activities took place as part of the World Children’s Day in the last couple of weeks with the Walkathon being a major event.
