Muscat, August 8 - While children claimed to have learned a lot of new skills at a recent summer programme organised in Al Khabourah, organisers felt they were “necessary to make them (students) develop the love for volunteering”.

Participants learnt artistic skills, including drawing using acrylic and crayon colours.

The objective of the programme was to develop students’ knowledge, skills and talent. The task was achieved through several activities, including education, knowledge and entertainment.

In the fine arts workshop conducted by Halima al yaqoobi, children learnt to draw and paint using melted wax. Besides portraits, they designed posters to express themselves on various topical issues, including cyber-crimes.

Jawaher Yaqoob al Hosni, a participant, said: “I learnt how to make awesome artworks using was crayons. I drew pictures showing cyber-crimes committed through social media.”

Sara Ahmed al Aaabi, who participated in a workshop on sewing and handmade crafts, could not believe “I could make clothes for my little sister”.

“Thanks to the workshop, I can do it now.”

On the other hand, the programme was intended to show students ways of voluntary work by meeting people from different volunteer groups.

Ali al Sheyadi, a member of Al Suwaiq Voluntary Group, said: “Such programmes help students develop love for volunteering work.”

Naser Kalfan al Homani, a member of Hiba and Atta Group for Elderly Services, said: “Giving students a chance to experience this type of work is amazing. Thanks to such programmes, people’s awareness is increasing and it helps shape their personality.”
