Charitable efforts to help the needy amid virus lockdown

Muscat: Shaikh Mohammed bin Said al Kalbani, Minister of Social Development on Tuesday met with officials and representatives of charitable organizations at the Relief and Sheltering Sector centre.


The minister expressed his thanks to the charitable organizations for their role in meeting community needs while the Sultanate grapples with the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.


The minister pointed to the huge efforts exerted by charitable and voluntary organizations in helping low-income families and small business owners meet daily needs especially those whose businesses were affected by the Coronavirus lockdown.


He affirmed that the social development committees are playing their part studying and identifying the requirements of the society segments affected.


With the holy month of Ramadhan just around the corner, the minister stressed the need for a different mechanism for supporting the poor and needy people as well as increasing the number of food packs handouts provided to low-income and poor families specially in the wilayats of Muscat and Muttrah, the minister said confirming that the Oman Charitable Organization(OCO) is making great efforts by supporting the poor families in Muscat and Mutrah as well as the other wilayats of the Sultanate.


On their turn, the representatives of charitable institutions and societies affirmed that they are continuing to provide support to the concerned authorities to overcome this stage that requires more solidarity between all institutions.


They showed their support for all proposals and mechanisms that must be followed in agreement and coordination with the Ministry of Social Development, as well as setting a platform for charitable work that contributes to regulating charitable work in the society.
