Cancer Day to be observed on Feb 4

Muscat, Jan 31 - The Royal Opera House will adorn the colours of green and yellow on February 4 to observe the World Cancer Day. Dr Waheed al Kharousi, Chairman of Oman Cancer Association, said in a press conference on Wednesday that Oman Cancer Association (OCA) was preparing to mark the global annual Cancer Day on that day. The Union International for Cancer Control (UICC) has endorsed this day to be dedicated for cancer awareness and control. “The UICC wanted us to have one of the national monuments to don these colours on the day and the Royal Opera House graciously accepted it. We are grateful,” said Dr Al Kharousi. The aim of the day is to “be a tool for cancer awareness, prevention and control and to remind, at the global and national level, about cancer and its burden”.


It is also a day dedicated for the cancer patients, survivors and their families, reminding them that they are not alone, that they are an integral part of society and the community is there for them.


OCA, in association with Oman Avenues Mall, have hold awareness event from 10 am to 10 pm. A Mobile Mammography Unit will offer free mammograms to women in the age group 40 years and above.


In addition, free clinical medical examination for women and free clinical breast examination by volunteer expert physicians will be conducted as part of awareness and prevention of breast cancer.


There will also be a one-to-one discussion on cancer to clear any doubts.


The ‘Hug-a-Bear’ party for children with cancer will be held at the Royal Hospital at 11 am on February 12 in the Oncology Department and a party for children of Dar Al Hanan with cancer at 4.30 pm.
