MUSCAT: Specialised reports and studies have found that children who go into the wide Internet without awareness or guidance may be more vulnerable to extortion and cyber piracy. They are more likely to suffer from psychological problems and behavioural disorders.

Long hours spent with tablets, and the rate of changes in social and moral habits and behaviour may be high because of the quality of materials that may be exposed to them from persons who do not have a specific identity or place in this large space.

All these results may occur for any child, if he does not find continuous follow-up, guidance and constant advice from the parent. This is why the TRA launched the national awareness campaign for children on the use of security for communications means and services (Khalk Aref), said Muna al Balushi, Senior Specialist of International Relations at TRA.

She added: “Before purchasing mobile phones for children, parents must know the amount of risk that a child may have when entering this vast and unknown space. Parents must know the child’s physical, psychological and emotional ability to deal with the smartphone. They have to specify the times when the devices to be used in a balanced manner and explain those rules in their control as long as a proper agreement is reached on their use of the communications equipment.

Muna, who is part of the National Awareness Campaign for Children on the Use of Security for Communications Means and Services at the TRA pavilion at COMEX 2018, says: “There are rules parents should be following up children’s behaviours and thinking while using communication devices. The parents must supervise the use of children of communication devices and provide them an area of confidence and freedom according to age.

Saud al Ibri said: “The campaign (Khalk Aref) relates to the safety of children in the use of Internet. By guiding the parents about the quality and risks of Internet uses and directing them on how to minimise these risks or avoid altogether. They are providing brochures suitable for the child and guardian, including a model for the convention on the use of communication devices between parents and their children and a booklet of advices before joining the social networking sites and a booklet of awareness for children (Arif and Ziro, Hackers attack).”
