Muscat, Sept 26 - A camp was organised recently to educate farmers about how to protect palm plantations from the red palm weevil, a species of beetle considered a pest.

Volunteers for Better Oman (VBO) organised the camp in coordination with the Directorate of Agriculture and Livestock in Al Batinah North and the Circle of Agriculture Development in Liwa.

Municipal Council; Salim al Omrani, the General Director of Directorate of Agriculture and Livestock in Al Batinah Governorate; Khalfan al Muqbali, an expert in the directorate; and Ahmed al Farsi, Director, Circle of Agriculture Development; and specialists in agriculture sciences attended the camp.

The camp discussed ways to protect palm plantations from any diseases as well as symptoms of palm weevil infection, growing stages of the weevil and how to treat the infected palm trees.

Salim al Omrani said: “We must do more to save the palm plantations and ensure community participation in the effort.”
