Building contractor gets 'suspended' sentence for pact violation

Muscat:  The Court of First Instance in Saham recently sentenced a building contractor to three months' imprisonment and a fine of RO500. The jail sentence has been suspended while rest of the penalties will be executed as per the judgement.


As per the details, the The Directorate General for Consumer Protection received a complaint by a consumer stating that there was an agreement to build a two-storey apartment according to approved design and specifications.


To be completed in stages, the contractor could finish only eight per cent of the first stage as per a report submitted by the consultant despite the agreed amount that was paid under the contract for that particular phase.


The contractor admitted that the delay because some of his workers involved in the project had left the job and the complainant refused to accept his suggestion to the project to be handled by


a new contractor.


An engineering expert was assigned to submit report a to report and the case was referred to the public prosecutor  and then to the competent court, who issued the judgment.
