MUSCAT: The Department of Allied Health Sciences at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at Sultan Qaboos University celebrated International Biomedical Laboratory Sciences Day on April 16 under the auspices of Sayyidah Dr Mona bint Fahad al Said, SQU Assistant Vice-Chancellor for International Cooperation.

International Biomedical Laboratory Science Day is celebrated annually on April 15 to promote and acknowledge the role of biomedical laboratory professionals in diagnostic and preventative healthcare organisations.

This year’s theme is ‘Antibiotic resistance: Biomedical laboratory scientists respond to the global threat’.

The Department of Allied Medical Sciences liaised with other departments concerned to organise the events. The exhibition had separate sections to highlight the roles and services of the haematology, histopathology, biochemistry, microbiology, medial physics, physiology, genetics and anatomy units of the college.

The purpose of the annual celebration is to educate the public in the hard work that biomedical laboratory scientists do in quality development, diagnosis, treatment, research, development and public healthcare.

The event focused on the important role played by biomedical laboratory scientists, one of the largest groups of healthcare professionals in healthcare field.

The role of biomedical laboratory scientists in medicine is poorly understood by the patients and their families and even colleagues within health care administration.

The event was a platform to motivate the biomedical scientists and to promote the Biomedical Science programme at SQU.
