MUSCAT: The National Bioethics Committee (NBC) at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) held its second meeting of the year 2017, under the chair of Dr Ali bin Saud al Bimani, Vice-Chancellor of SQU and Chairman of the Bioethics Committee. The meeting discussed a number of topics on its agenda. Members of the committee reviewed the measures taken to implement the recommendations of the committee at its previous meetings and the latest developments in the topics discussed.

The meeting adopted the final version of the Stem Cell Document, completed discussion of the regulations of the committee and other topics related to bioethics issues, and the possibility of establishing a bioethics unit in the College of Medicine for which a team was formed, containing members from the College of Medicine and NBC. The team is chaired by Dr Mansour al Mantheri. Dr Al Bimani and Chairman of NBC recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) on the promotion of bioethics programmes, signed by Dr Nada al Nashif, Unesco’s Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences.

The memorandum mentioned several items, the most important of which are the training and capacity-building of members of NBC, the development of the committee’s working mechanisms and the guidance of its members on the best sources of training in the world. — ONA
