Big drop in number of small enterprises

MUSCAT: The total number of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) decreased by 36.5 per cent at the end of October 2017 to 7,506 compared to October 2016 when there were 11,828 SMEs, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information. There was a 32 per cent decrease in the total number of medium enterprises in October 2017 to 19 compared to 28 in September, the data showed.


Dhofar registered a 68.7 per cent decrease from 1,334 SMEs at the end of October 2016 to 417 SMEs during the same period this year. There was a 54.7 per cent fall in the number of SMEs in the Governorates of Al Dhahirah from 907 SMEs at the end of October 2016 to 411 SMEs at the end of October 2017. In Al Dakhiliyah, there was a 51.4 per cent decrease from 1,990 at the end of October 2016 to 967 SMEs at the end of October 2017.


The number of SMEs in the Governorate of North Al Sharqiyah at the end of October 2017 stood at 503 compared to 950 SMEs at the end of October 2016, registering a 47.1 per cent decrease.


The Governorate of South Al Sharqiyah witnessed a 39.3 per cent decrease in the number of SMEs from 722 at the end of October 2016 to 438 SMEs at the end of October 2017. The number of SMEs decreased by 37.8 per cent in the Governorate of North Al Batinah from 1,793 at the end of October 2016 to 1,115 SMEs at the end of October 2017.


There was a 12.6 per cent decrease in the number of SMEs in the Governorate of South Al Batinah from 788 at the end of October 2016 to 689 SMEs at the end of October.


At 5.8 per cent, the Governorate of Al Wusta witnessed the least decrease at the end of October 2017 with 98 SMEs compared to 104 SMEs during the same period last year, the data showed.


With 39 per cent of total SMEs, the Governorate of Muscat topped the number of SMEs, followed by the Governorate of North Al Batinah with 14 per cent.


The Governorate of Al Dakhiliyah has 11 per cent, the Governorate of South Al Batinah has 8 per cent and the rest of the governorates together has 28 per cent of the total number of SMEs. — ONA
