Berlin: Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has urged his club to spend more money on new players in order to stay competitive.

The Poland international told Saturday’s edition of Der Spiegel news magazine that the Bundesliga champions could only remain a top side “through international success and the acquisition of top stars”.

“Bayern must come up with something and be creative when the club wants to continue to lure world-class players to Munich. If you want to play at the top you need the quality of these players. Such stars also make their team-mates better,” Lewandowski said.

“Up to now Bayern have never spent more than 40 million euros ($48.2 million) for a player. In international football this is more an average sum than a top figure.”

Bayern have won a record five straight Bundesliga titles but their last international success dates back to the 2013 Champions League and Club World Cup titles.

They spent an estimated 41.5 million in summer on Corentin Tolisso, around the same figure they dished out a few years ago on Javi Martinez — the biggest amount Munich have spent for a player.

Lewandowski spoke of “a huge gap” to other clubs, with the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City investing more than 200 million euros each in summer. PSG shattered the transfer record by signing Brazil’s Neymar for 222 million euros.

The 29-year-old agreed with those who said that the European body UEFA must have a close look whether its Financial Fair Play rules still work and together with the world governing body Fifa find ways that “the market doesn’t get out of hand completely.”

But he added: “Football is pure capitalism, everyone wants to make money in this business.” — dpa
