Muscat: Azzan al Rumhi will compete in the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in Auckland, New Zealand, from October 26–29. The national team golfer will be representing Oman at the event hosted by the Royal Wellington Golf Club.
“I’m really excited to participate,” Azzan says, adding that after a successful week in Jordan he’s learnt “how important it is to stay focused and never give up.”
The Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship is one of the biggest events in the world for amateur golfers. With an overall mission to grow the game in the region, it’s in its ninth year now and has been growing in stature every year, with the 2017 winner earning a place in the US Masters and the world’s oldest golfing championship, The Open. Undoubtedly two of the biggest and most prestigious events in the golfing world.
Al Rumhi will compete against approximately 120 other amateur golfers from across the globe, including 8 other GCC golfers. The event will mark Al Rumhi’s fourth international appearance for Oman this year, following appearances at the GCC Championship in Bahrain and the MENA Tour in Dubai and Jordan. Also entering the championship is India’s Rayhan Thomas who recently made record book history at the MENA Tour, shooting nine straight birdies at the Dubai Creek Open.
Al Rumhi, who has recently returned from representing Oman at the MENA Tour in Jordan, has previously participated in the Asia-Pacific championship 4 times, shooting a tremendous 74 at the 2014 event in Melbourne. Al Rumhi has been working hard on his game through regular coaching sessions with National Team Manager, Steven Troup.
“Being able to expose our best Omani golfers to such an experience and have them play alongside some of the world’s best amateur golfers makes this event particularly important and is something all Omani golfers, new or experienced, can work towards,” says Troup.
The world-class event aims to inspire young golfers by giving them the opportunity to watch great golfers play the game and provide real examples for their aspirations. Al Rumhi will be looking to finish highest amongst the other Arab golfers competing as well as attempting to make the cut in what will be an incredibly strong field.
