SALALAH: Earth Day was celebrated with a gusto in Salalah. Educational institutions organised events to mark the day while some business houses engaged with schools and came out with the strong message of protecting the planet Earth. Awareness was the key among all the events.

An international event, the Earth Day and is celebrated every year on April 22. It was initiated by Senator Gaylord Nelson of the United States in 1970 and is being celebrated at international level from 1990. Today, more than 500 million people in 193 countries observe Earth Day to voice their appreciation for the planet and demand its protection. Earth Day is a call from Mother Earth to each inhabitant of the blue planet for concrete and concerted actions.

Indian School Salalah celebrated the World Earth Day with a special assembly and plantation of trees in the school premises. Tree saplings were planted by the Principal TR Brown and HoD of the social science department Unnikrishnan. Students also took part in plantation of saplings in the school ground.

Under the slogan of ‘My Earth is my responsibility’, Hilton Salalah Resort found the Day an opportunity to engage with the schoolchildren. The hospitality house’s team visited one of the local schools, met the children and asked them to talk about the importance of saving the Earth asked them how this can be achieved.

“We ensured that their explanation should come through drawing only. We were so delighted to see and feel the great commitment and interest from these future generations while they were trying to do the best drawing they can with their little hands. We believe that the message about the importance to save the earth and water and energy etc was well delivered. And we trust that if all future youth around the world care for the same, then the Earth will really be in safe hands,” said Soumaya bin Ali, Assistant L and D Manager of the hotel.

Similarly, Crowne Plaza Resort Salalah, took a wider canvass to engage with the community and organised a surprise event by raising the slogans to save the mother Earth. About 50 employees of the hotel gathered at Lulu Hypermarket and engaged with the visitors there. They were found convincing the visitors to conserve the Earth by planting more trees and adopting means that did not affect the environment adversely.

A large number of children took part in the event with balloons and small posters made especially for the day. The hypermarket visitors were invited to take part in the event and share the cake cut to mark the day.

“We wanted to impress upon the gathering about the importance of using eco-friendly in our day-to-day life. We tried to target children and their parents at the same location to create general awareness for adopting the best practices to keep safe the Earth from getting polluted and make it a better place to for the generations to come,” said a senior manager of the hotel.
