Awareness campaign on cancer held

MUSCAT: In conjunction with World Head & Neck Cancer Day, the Tumours Units at Al Nahda Hospital organised an awareness campaign on symptoms of neck, mouth and head tumours at Avenues Mall on Tuesday. The campaign, held under the patronage of Her Highness Dr Tagreed bint Turki al Said, was attended by number of specialised doctors and technicians. The event aimed to raise the awareness of the public about the symptoms of neck, mouth and head tumours, explaining its causes, the way to avoid, as well as training the public on self-examination to detecting theses tumours earlier for better treatment. Dr Salma al Shaibania, senior consultant, oncology surgery and head of ENT Department at Al Nahda Hospital, said in her speech that the most important symptoms of cancer are ulcers and tumours in the mouth, continuously nose bleeding especially with the elderly, tumours in the neck, hoarseness that lasts more than two weeks with difficulty in swallowing or breathing. She said smoking is the main cause of cancer in the mouth, followed by chewing tobacco and alcohol.
