SUHAR: The Directorate for Combating Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances at the North Al Batinah Governorate Police Command has foiled an attempt to smuggle a large amount of chewing tobacco and banned cigarette packets concealed in a bulk cement trailer bearing a registration plate of a neighbouring country in Suhar, a Royal Oman Police official has said.

Following a tip-off about the smuggling activities of the driver, an Asian national, the police arrested him while travelling to the Sultanate.

By searching the vehicle, the police found more than 12,000 cartons of banned cigarettes and more than 4,000 packages of chewing tobacco.

The driver admitted to committing the crime of smuggling and he was referred to the judicial authority for legal proceedings, the official said.

Royal Oman Police (ROP) calls on all citizens and residents to call the emergency number to report any suspected activities or provide information which would be useful in detecting crimes.
