NIZWA, Feb 20 -

An athletics championship will be held for the Al Dakhiliyah schools as part of the plan to select the governorate team for participating in the School Olympics Day competition in April.

The School Sports Committee in the Directorate-General of Education in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate is making preparations to organise the championship.

The committee held a meeting with sports teachers from different schools who will judge the championship.

Abdullah bin Ibrahim al Kindi, a sports specialist in Al Dakhiliyah Directorate-General of Education, said the tournament will help in selecting players for the governorate team.

The meeting, he said, discussed the organisational and technical aspects of the tournament and the scheduling and beginning of registration.

Mohammed bin Salim al Shukaili, a sports specialist, said those born in 2004 and 2005 can participate in the championship. It will have seven competitions: 100-metre, 400-metre and 800-metre runs, javelin throw, shot-put, long jump and high jump.

He said the committee has designed an electronic system to register names of students wishing to participate. March 1 is the last date for registration. The championship will be held on March 8 at Nizwa Sports Complex.
