MUSCAT: The Ophthalmology Conference, 2017 began on Saturday with participation of 350 eye specialists from the Sultanate, GCC and other countries. The opening ceremony was presided over Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed al Saeedi, Minister of Health. The conference is organised by the Oman Ophthalmic Society (OOS) in collaboration with the ministry of health, armed forces medical services, Oman Medical Specialty Board and Sultan Qaboos University. Speaking at the event, Dr Rashid bin Mohammed al Saeedi, conference director said that OOS has adopted a strategy to concentrate on a certain illness starting from diagnosis to the latest medicines and treatment techniques. The preparation for this conference began in early 2015 by forming the organising committee and subcommittees in each medical sector.
Due to the Sultanate’s advancement in the control over common and contagious diseases, by the attestation of international organisations, emphasis has been laid on the eradication of the modern-age diseases which cause poor eyesight and blindness, Al Saeedi said.
On the event sidelines, the minister of health and chief guest opened the accompanying medical products exhibition which showcases latest technologies for treating corneal diseases.
The exhibition saw participation of international firms specialising in the manufacturing of medical devices used in eye surgeries. The conference includes workshops and working sessions for presentation of working papers dealing with eye problems with special focus on the retinal diseases and the corneal curvature. The conference is aimed at acquainting the participants about the latest trends in eye diseases in terms of diagnosis and treatment, early detection and treatment of corneal disease as well as exchanging expertise with international ophthalmologists. — ONA
