Private jet makes emergency landing in Muscat

By Vinod Nair — MUSCAT: Jan. 8 - Muscat International Airport experienced an emergency landing by an aircraft (MHV640) that originated from the Maldives and was flying to Abu Dhabi, said Public Authority for Civil Aviation (PACA) in response to media reports on Sunday. PACA said as per the preliminary data available, the German private jet with nine passengers onboard reported a malfunction in its right engine just as it entered the Omani airspace in Muscat at 2.10 pm. The pilot requested the ATC for permission to land in Muscat in accordance with the established procedures as there were injured passengers onboard.

The concerned agencies at Muscat International Airport ensured the safe landing of the aircraft at 3:14 pm and the injured passengers were transported to the hospital for treatment. The aircraft is still parked at Muscat airport and investigations are under way to find reasons led to its emergency landing and make sure that it is safe to fly under the rights granted to PACA under the Civil Aviation Act promulgated by Decree High Royal Decree No 2004/93. The statement by PACA was in response to reports that the emergency landing was due to the possibility of a near mid-air collision. While admitting the fact that there was an emergency landing on Saturday, PACA sources told the Observer that reasons cited were not fully accurate.
