Moscow: Russia’s Alexei Sorokin has confirmed he is ready to bid for a spot on Fifa’s ruling Council after Deputy Prime Minister

Vitaly Mutko was barred from standing.

Sorokin, an official on the 2018 World Cup organising committee, would step in after Mutko was told by Fifa he could not stand again due to his position as deputy prime minister

“He (Sorokin) has said that he may join the race for the (Fifa Council) post,” World Cup organising committee press spokesman Anton Lisin said on Friday.

Mutko, who has also been accused of involvement in Russia’s sports doping scandal, had been a candidate for a European seat on the Fifa Council to be decided in April.

“In theory such a move (to become a candidate) is possible,” R-Sport agency quoted Sorokin as saying.

“The most important thing for Russia is not to lose its place on the council. The Russian Football Union will make the decision on the case.”

There are four vacant European seats on the ruling council of world football’s governing body. If Sorokin misses a chance to run Russia would have no representative.

The other four UEFA candidates — Sandor Csanyi of Hungary, Cyprus’ Costakis Koutsokoumnis, Dejan Savicevic of Montenegro and Iceland’s Geir Thorsteinsson — would therefore be elected unopposed. — AFP
