Drive against dengue-causing mosquitoes begins today

MUSCAT, JAN 6 - A campaign to combat the menace of mosquitoes that cause dengue fever will be launched on Monday, with the aim of “total eradication,” said a statement from the Ministry of Health (MoH).
The two-week campaign against Aedes aegypti, the virus that carries the disease, is being organised under the theme ‘Your Cooperation Indicates Your Awareness’.
It is being launched under the auspices of Dr Ahmed Mohammed al Saeedi, Minister
of Health, at Majlis al Sayyida Fatima bint Ali Mosque in North Al Hail.
Six cases of dengue were reported in Oman in December, while 33 cases were reported last year.
The Ministry sounded an alert after the presence of dengue-causing mosquitoes were reported in the wilayats of Seeb and Bausher.
The MoH and the Muscat Municipality fumigated the areas that were reported to have the presence of Aedes aegypti mosquito. Failure to comply with the health teams’ actions could result in severe fines, they had warned.
Experts said Aedes aegypti can spread dengue fever, chikungunya, zika fever, mayaro and yellow fever viruses.
A survey was carried out by dedicated teams in Muttrah, Wadi Kabir, Darsait, Al Fahal, Sultan Qaboos Port, Hamriyah, Tiwyan, Ruwi, Bait Al Falaj and
Sidab. The report has been sent to the laboratory for further examination.
The MoH and Muscat Municipality, in cooperation with the walis’ offices as well as volunteers, have made preparations for conducting the campaign in the governorates.
The campaign also includes provision of necessary resources as well as training of field teams that will visit some households in Seeb, Bausher, Muttrah, besides logistics services.
“We call upon all citizens and residents to cooperate with the field teams involved in the campaign,” said a senior MoH official.
