Several weather monitoring stations in the Sultanate of Oman recorded temperatures that were above the monthly average in January, according to Oman Meteorology.
The monitoring station in Masirah Island recorded a cumulative 51 mm of rain during January 2023, which is the highest for January since 1992, when it recorded cumulative amounts of 60 mm.
Oman Meteorology said Thamrait recorded the highest temperature of 20.2°C, which was +1.18 above the monthly average, and Al Buraimi at 19.4°C (+1), Salalah at 24.3°C (+0.9) and Masirah at 23°C (+0.4).
Muscat recorded the highest temperature of 32.9°C, Qurayat 32.5°C, Al Amerat 32.4°C, Qalhat 32.3°C and Al Mazyouna 32°C.
The Khasab station recorded a decrease of -3°C compared to the average.
It may be noted that in Muscat January is the coldest month of the year with daytime maximum temperatures at 25°C and night temperatures at 17°C.
It may be noted that the World Bank Group’s Roadmap for Climate Action focuses on climate action and green recovery in the region.
The Sultanate of Oman’s National Strategy for Adaptation and Mitigation for Climate Change (2020-2040) focuses on the use of advanced tools to establish historical climate trends to better understand future climate change.
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, and the Environment Authority (EA) have supported the measures needed to reduce the adverse impact of climate change, especially limiting the annual temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of this century from current predictions of over 2.5 degrees Celsius.
