IFJ Congress: Media representatives arrive in Oman

During the opening ceremony, the Sultanate of Oman award for the best press photo in the world will be announced, and five families of journalists who lost their lives while performing their duties will be honoured

The Omani capital, Muscat, will host journalists and media representatives from different media organisations -- newspapers, TV channels and online media -- from more than 100 countries on Tuesday. Most of the media representatives have already arrived to be part of the International Conference of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) Congress in its 31st edition. The event venue is Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre.


The four-day event will also host press unions and associations from different continents to brainstorm the present and future scenarios of media, current developments and the future of media.

The conference agenda includes an opening speech by Dr Mohammed bin Mubarak al Araimi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Omani Journalists Association (OJA), and a speech by Younis Mujahid, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the IFJ, as well as the screening of a documentary film on journalism in the Sultanate of Oman.


During the opening ceremony, the Sultanate of Oman award for the best press photo in the world will be announced, and 5 families of journalists who lost their lives while performing their journalistic work will be honored.


During the meetings of the IFJ, the founding meeting will also be held, the presidency and general committees will be elected, and the plenary session will be held to discuss the Secretary's report General' solidarity messages', continental and parallel meetings of the General Conference committees on financial decisions, laws, the Secretary-General's report, the Honourary Treasurer's report, the election of administrative candidates, in addition to discussing legal and regular suggestions.


"The 31st Congress of the IFJ aims to introduce media work in the Sultanate of Oman and cooperation between various media institutions, in addition to introducing the Omani journalists and media persons to all the details of this large organization, which includes more than 600,500 journalists around the world," said Dr Mohammed bin Mubarak al Araimi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Omani Journalists Association.


He added that the work of the conference will include dialogue sessions that include many journalists from different countries of the world, during which their experiences in media will be presented to the benefit of the participants, by journalists from both inside and outside the Sultanate of Oman, in addition to a lecture on the foreign policy of the Sultanate of Oman and a lecture on the Oman Vision 2040.


The economic and promotional aspects and the presentation of a promotional film aimed at introducing the Sultanate of Oman's economic, cultural and social components will also be previewed.


Al Araimi pointed out that the International Federation provides services to journalists in various countries of the world, where there are committees for women journalists, committees for freedoms and committees for subsidies, and the card issued by the union containing many features that help the journalist will also be introduced.


"The 31st International Federation of Journalists’ Congress and its meetings are an opportunity to discuss issues of journalists and press freedom and what is happening at the global level, in addition to that Muscat will be an important station for electing the IFJ Board of Directors for the next session," said Younis Mujahid, President of the IFJ.
