Muscat, Feb 12

Anthon Charmig of UnoX clinched the third stage of the Tour of Oman coming up trumps after the short final climb at Qurayyat, here on Saturday.

The Danish rider defeated Jan Hirt (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert) in the closing stages of the 2.8km climb, which had an average gradient of 6.5 percent.

Towards the end, Arkea-Samsic's Elie Gesbert wrapped up the race in two seconds to claim the final podium spot and conclude the day's proceedings.

Second stage winner and the highly decorated Mark Cavendish was off-colour as he finished several minutes down and so Charmig moves into the red jersey as overall leader.

The two opening stages that were flat set up the Tour for the riders but coming into the steep third stage, it was always going to test the nerves of the peloton.

The third stage headed for Oman's hilly terrain brought the general classification contenders into the picture ahead of Sunday's punchy stage and the critical summit finish on Green Mountain.

The 180km stage started at the Sultan Qaboos University and offered a preview of the central climb on stage 4's hilly circuit before heading over undulating terrain towards Qurayyat, where Alexey Lutsenko won en route to overall victory at the last edition in 2019.
