Ibrahim al Maqbali elected as chairman of OVA

Eng Ibrahim al Maqbali was elected as new chairman of Oman Volleyball Association (OVA) on Thursday during the general assembly of OVA to elect the new board members for the (2021-2024) term. As many as 23 clubs took part in the general assembly meeting which was held in the main indoor hall of the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex.


Dr Hamod al Hasani from Seeb, Dr Amer al Touqi from Al Kamil W’al Wafi club and Eng Ibrahim al Maqbali from Sohar club were the three nominees for the chairmanship post.


In the first round, Dr Hamod al Hasani had 11 votes while his opponent Ibrahim al Maqbali had seven votes and Dr Amer got five votes. Due to outreaching the votes to 50 per cent +1 the election team decided for another round of votes to all the three nominees for chairman.


The Sohar club representative managed in this round to obtain the confidence of the assembly general as he had 10 votes while Dr Hamod al Hasani had nine votes. Dr Amer got four votes only.


Then, the election team declared Eng Ibrahim al Maqbali as the new chairman of OVA.


Salim al Jabri from Majees club vied for the vice-chairman position with Dhofar’s Abdullah al Maqudam. Al Jabri won the post after having 13 votes to beat the Dhofar representative who got 10 votes.


Mohammed al Hashmi (Al Kamil W’al Wafi representative) was elected as the secretary-general of OVA after he won the position by 15 votes than Rashid al Hamadani from Al Shabab club. Qais al Said was elected as board treasurer while Suada al Azri was selected as the woman representative in the board. The other elected members for the board were Salim al Balushi (18 votes), Eng Khalid al Oraimi (16 votes), Rashid Salim (14 votes) and Issa al Balushi (13 votes).


After the election, the newly elected chairman of OVA affirmed that popularising volleyball in the Sultanate is one of the priorities in the next term.


“Thanks to all the clubs for their confidence in me to lead the OVA. We will do our level best with the support of board members to accomplish all the desired goals and objectives for development of volleyball. There are many challenges and we will outline all the priorities in the first board meeting very soon. Development of the domestic competition and overseas participation for the national teams, beach volleyball teams and women’s volleyball are some of the top priority assignments for the new board,” he added.
