MUSCAT: The State Council and Majlis Ash’shura, represented by  Musallam bin Ali al Maashani and Khamis bin Said al Sulaimi and from Majlis Ash’shura, both the Deputy Chairmen, Rashid bin Ahmed al Shamsi and Salem bin Ali al Kaabi concluded their participation at the Arab Parliament meet in Cairo on Sunday. Mishael Bin Faham al Sulami, Member of the Saudi Shura Council, was elected the new President of the Arab Parliament, for a two-year term at the session held on Saturday.

State Council member, Musallam bin Ali Al Maashani, was elected to the position of Vice President in the elections of the Arab Parliament.

In his first statement, Al Sulami stressed  that he would build on the achievements accomplished by his predecessors and would work on transforming the Arab Parliament into a forum to debate of great interest to the Arab people from a parliamentarian perspective and for the benefit of the Arab nations.

Dr Meshal promised that the highlights of his presidency would be prosperity and proactive efforts. He also affirmed that he would seek, during his term, to boost Arab parliamentary action for overcoming challenges and focusing efforts on maintaining national and naval security. Adding further, he said that the parliament would witness a quantum leap in terms of its legislative, administrative and financial role in the forthcoming period.

Dr Meshal said he would work on achieving reconciliations amongst Arabs and launching initiatives to unify the Arab nation in order to overcome the current challenges.

The parliament will also promote cooperation and coordination with the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), European Parliament and South America’s Parliament to serve the mutual interests, he pointed out.

Subsequently, the parliament discussed the Committee of Economic and Financial Affairs of Parliament’s report on the draft budget for 2017 Parliament and compared with the 2016 budget.

The session approved the work plan of the Arab Parliament in addition to the adoption of the four standing committee’s agenda.

The Arab parliament had started its procedural session, and the four Vice-Presidents headed the four standing committees of the parliament with their deputies and discussed the work of their respective committees for the first session of the second legislative term plans.
