Al Suwaiq set to extend lead

MUSCAT, Nov 27 - With only last matches of the first phase of the Omantel League football remaining, Al Suwaiq are clear on top with 31 points from 12 matches, six ahead of second-placed Al Shabab on 25 points.


The 13th round of OL will be played on Tuesday evening.


The dates of the second and final phase of the league will be decided by the Oman Football Association (OFA) by December first week, according to the OFA sources.


Al Nasr are third with 21 points, two ahead of Al Oruba, who are in fourth spot.

Al Nahda impressed in patches and are on fifth with 18 points and are two points ahead of Muscat, who are on sixth position.


Defending champions Dhofar have a forgetful first phase as they toil at ninth with only 13 points and are just ahead of another former champions Fanja on goal difference.


Fanja, who were in the relegations zone, managed to just stay ahead of relegation zone with the last match of the phase crucial for them. Al Mudhaibi, who earned promotion from the first division, are also on 13 points and stay 11th on the table.


Oman Club (12), Al Salam (12) and Mirbat (10) are the other clubs in the relegation zone.


On Tuesday, leaders Al Suwaiq take on Suhar at Suhar Sports Complex eyeing a win to consolidate their position.


In other major fixtures, Al Shabab take on Oman Club at Seeb Sports Stadium, Al Nasr clash with Saham, Al Oruba meet Muscat at Sur Sports Complex, Fanja take on Al Nahda and Dhofar play Al Mudhaibi at Al Saada Sports Complex.
